I love this car.

Even before she docked my life started to change, family stuff, work stuff, the usual but leaving me with far less free time. In the ensuing five years she spent her first 14 months parked on the street unitil I built a large enough garage, she's always leaked, I bailed her out most days, since then she's been used whenever I could, just as often as a builders van, for dumping stuff at the tip, whatever. all year round she's been pretty reliable, given apart from oil changes and screwing back anything that fell off she's been horribly neglected.

With a bit of time at last, you can imagine it was with some trepidation that I chiselled off the badly fitted, lumpy looking bits of soundproofing from the brown and flaky Looking rear floorpans......result ! A few hours with a wire brush and some thinners and, well I couldn't be much happier right now. I'm sure the front will be worse, but now I have the enthusiasm to find out

Hmm, Ok, so I've just hoiked out the front passenger seat and scraped that floorpan. Not quite so pretty, but not a disaster. Looks like the welder will be coming out after all. I suppose I should get on to the other side and find out the worst...

Is that actually holed or heavy surface rust? A decent session with the grinder and some POR15?

Yeah, the small dark patches to the right are holes.

I've done the drivers side now, a bit worse as expected, but really not bad considering... It looks like someone has used a rust converter on the floor in the past, before 'reinforcing' it with some sound deadening mat

Seen worse,like you say in a way it’s nice to know its not hanging.

So, I've ordered some sheet metal and a 3" mini grinder to chop out the rot, hopefully without making too much of a mess. I'll disinter the MIG this weekend and have a practise, it's been a while since I've had to do do any welding other than Arcing 1/4" plate....

The car has mid 70 's Mopar electronic ignition (chrome box), other than the battery, is there anything else I should disconnect before welding on the car ?

Personally I would have bought replacement floorpans and fitted those. They are not that expensive and will make a better permanent job of it, it might even be quicker to do. Some of that floorpan although not holed will be too thin to weld and you might be surprised how much of it you end up cutting out. Anyway, your car your call!

I was kind of keen to have a go at making up some little patch panels myself, but if half the floor ends up like a teabag once I hit it with the grinder I'll be reconsidering that....

Similar to my Charger- why is the driver's side floorpan always worse than the passenger's ?

I've got an AMD driver's side floor panel and I'm just using the front portion; it's all good at the back and around the crossmember.

Anybody got any good ideas about what to paint the inside of the floorpan with ? I was thinking something with a light texture ?

Possibly because it's the most used side of the vehicle.

Being currently without a compressor in the garage, I'm without a little cut off wheel. not wanting to lay in to the floor with a 4 1/2" grinder, I bagged a little hand sized 3" jobby, for £23 off EBay I was fully expecting junk, but this actually feels reasonably sturdy ! hopefully good enough for what I need anyway. I 'll report once I've given it a try
