column shifter

Hello guys
I am about to spend the day fettling (the Coronet!!) but wondered.......
How are the shift levers for column autos supposed to be attatched to the slot on the column and are they supposed to be sprung and have a clutch so you cant accidentally select any gear at any time?
Mine is just fastned with a wing nut.
It pivots but forward or backwards movements do not make any difference...you can select a gear wherever it is.
I love the column vibe but if its knackered, wouldnt mind a floor shifter.
How does the floor shifter take over from the column in terms of attatching to the 'box
