Can anyone id my axle for me please? I need wheel bearings and have no idea what I'm running. The typed "history" sheet that seems to have come from the US tells me one thing but I'm not sure.
as it says in the info that MilesnMiles put the link to (same as this one http://www.autohobbydigest.com/8_75.html ) the i.d. to look for is a large 'X' for the 'smaller' 741 casing (it also says ----741), a large '2' for the more desireable 742, or a large 9 for the favoured 489.
The pic below shows our Polara's wimpish 741 - note the 'X' and the smaller ----741 markings.
Our Satellite's got a 489 but I havent got a pic of it or its markings, sorry. But I do know it has the large 9 on it.
It's hard to see what it is Steve. At first glance i would say it is an 8 3/4
But if you were told it is a 9" Ford, - well perhaps it could be. The 9" Ford is a 'pumpkin' type axle too. We'd need a few more pictures, but there must be some identifying marks on it somewhere.

Cool. Thanks James (and everyone else) It's so handy to ask a daft question and get a sensible answer!!! As per that other current thread. Thanks again
