Kick down...or not

Post by Anonymous »

Hi all,

Ok, freshly rebuilt 727 (Not by Duncan I might add  ) When in D it'll change up from 1st to 2nd at about 25 mph and into 3rd at 40 mph. No probs (although it doesn't really rev up in between if floored)

Problem is, when in 3rd if I floor it it wont kick down it just builds up gradually.

Any ideas?

Hi Derek,

Yeah have been trying that cheers mate. Set it all to base settings as per the manual, using a rod to lock the linkage then set the adjustments from there, been lengthening/shortening the linkage but it doesn't seem to make any difference

When the throttle is wide open, the kickdown lever needs to be back as far as it will go for the box to kickdown. If you have an aftermarket carb/ intake manifold make sure you use the correct adaptor to connect up to a mopar throttle linkage, this usually allows enough adjustment to get the kickdown working. Sometimes you will need to cut and weld stuff to get it all to work.

EXACTLY the same problem with mine - took it to see cap'n Blue, he diagnosed a linkage adjustment - I had to buy a special adapter first.

Now mine is still not perfect (needs some fine tuning, but I have been concentrating on the headers) but yesterday - joy of joys - I got kickdown for the first time (this was a big moment for me ! :) ).

As Blue says, full throttle needs to push the lever on the side of the gearbox (via linkage) all the way to the stops. Anything less wont do it.

Now if I really stamp it (and I mean hard and fast) she will kick down. I think this might be Normal - Adam says his charger is the same - you have to really boot it to kickdown, otherwise she will just stay in top all day.

Hmm.

My motor used to kick down if going up hill and the revs were too low. Just a reasonable squeeze on the throttle and away.

Is yours doing that Phil???

same experience i had, no kick-down, adjusted the linkage (it was miles out), still no kick-down, but then following some good advice from Alex, booted it and it kicks-down a treat now :D

Doesn't the kickdown rod need to be all the way forward at throttle shut position too Blue? On mine I had to use a spring to pull it forward to that.
