What is the date cast into the block?

On some 383 and 440 blocks there is a machined pad near the distributor that has the size of the engine the year code letter and the letters HP the 5bhp difference may be the difference in the exhaust manifold used

:iagree:

But I was going to check against the engine spec for that year just in case there were any other differences such as carb, cam or compression. ;)

You can lose 5hp having a bad air day! (Or £80 if you go to Trevor Sorbet like me Moosus! :? )

The lower horse 383 had a 2bbl carb, the 335 had a 4bbl. The difference is in the inlet manifold and carbumerettor :)

that's right clivey but if it only 5bhp difference then its probably just the exhaust manifolds you got that sort of difference of only 5bhp when they put the 383 in the darts and had to revise the exhaust manifolds
