It's a Rover engine/box out of a P6 Circa 1978.
It was professionally rebuilt 1 year/ 1000miles ago and has been faultless since and has been kept topped up with good quality fluid.
It's now lost all forward gears, reverse is fine.
It was at a 'helluvan angle' in the ditch and he tried to drive it out but failed, when it got towed out i got him to check fluid level (get it hot, thru all gears then dip it at idle)- no fluid on dipstick! He added 1/2 litre at a time til up to the mark- still no joy.
A 'mechanic' advised him to tow it at 30mph in drive and this would 'free it'

So, any ideas anyone? Has he fried/snapped a belt? Have the little pixies who we all know actually make a trans work escaped while it was leaned over? Is it an opportunity to bung a cheap 318 combo in there probably for less than it'll cost to fix the trans?
LATEST NEWSFLASH- He's trying to get the AA to fetch it to mine and the are refusing on grounds of weight!!!!!
It's been on a weighbridge an clocks in at a nimble 1700Kilos (sorry- dunno what that is in real money...) LESS than a Range Rover.
They wont accept that this is the real weight and are insisting he reads the gross weight from the dash plate (i.e. the weight with a 318 in place)

If this is the case i hope none of us are in the AA !!!!
