Tips, techniques, warnings on engine removal
Moderator: Moderators
Ok you asked about warnings.. i had a spectacular accident whilst lifting the engine and transmission out of my Charger. (one of the times!) Mainly because you have to get it very high due to the angle you have to have the whole lot at , to get it through the bay. Even with the back of the car raised. Check the attached photo to see what I mean about the angle. Some lifting equipment might struggle to lift it high enough.
My accident was mainly caused by using hardened chain (from the locksmiths) to lift the engine out with. I thought chain was chain, but no. This has no give, and it fractured at the link that was bolted to the block because it tried to bend that link. The engine and trans came crashing down on the front wing, and the crane lept in the air. So , if you don't want a smashed engine, and smashed wing, thats one little tip for you
Correct chain, and (in my humble opinion since you are going to separate the engine and trans anyway,) take the engine and trans out of the car separately.

Wil, must be easier to take the Hood off
All in one is easiest guaranteed, putting it back is even easier lower it in roller board under the rear of the box, and lower the lot in its almost self seeking.
engine sat on its mounts
Lift the tail of the box, located box cross member and thats it in 20 mins max
done it many times no probs

Think i got it easy , the previos owner cut a section out the front support rail above the rad.
Considering it was already done when i got the Pit , made removal & install a piece of cake , the rail has near on 2ft 6" taken out , fixed back with 4 nuts & bolts.
Go easy , remember it was'nt me that cut it out.
Got yer thinkin aint it.

I took the engine out top side first, with a trolley jack under the tranny to support it. Then with the engine out, I wired the bell housing up on the bukkhead to release the trolley jack. Took the prop off, re-installed jack beneath tranny with wood to protect oil pan. Undid tranny mount, lowered jack, lifted tranny clear, slid it out on a scaffold board, picked tranny up, put it on my shoulder, and minced round the farm with it for a few minutes cos I couldnt believe how light it was. The lightest gearbox I have ever modelled
I took the engine out with a block n tackle mounted to a tele-handler (dont go and buy one for this job, this one was brand new and worth about 40K)

Seeing as you asked twice, I will try n get a piccy of me mincing round my back garden with a tranny this weekend.
(how saucy does THAT sound)
Just for clarity, this tranny wont be wearing a wig, pouting its lips, or trying to shove its meat n 2 veg into a pair of lacey under crackers.
BEFORE ANY OF YOU LOT GO BAND WAGGON JUMPING

Personally, I unclamp the steering, split the two lower control arms, pull the torsion bars and drop the lot out of the bottom and use the engine crance to lift the front of the car up.
No problem, no dramas and no damage.
However, I noticed Adam's Charger had a notched radiator top brace while I was admiring his plumbing
and remembered seeing this example of B body done the same way, with not only a notched top brace but also a notched K frame, that's really got to make things easier!
