Dodge Challenger Starts at $37,995 on sale Monday
Moderator: Moderators
Just, (yesterday), got back from Florida, loads of the new Chargers around, but l saw one that looked outstanding, a Daytona in Plum Crazy, this one really stood out from all the others l saw. Oh, and l had a nice new, (518 miles), Chrysler 300 for the 3 weeks!!!!!!!!

I will not be drawn into a battle of wits with an unarmed man!

Orders for Dodge Challenger Send Prices Skyrocketing
Reports are coming in of premiums being placed on the new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 before the vehicle even hits the streets. Ordering began last week for what is shaping up to be one of the hottest and most anticipated cars of 2008, the limited production V8 sports coupé with nostalgic retro-styling that is supposed to sticker for just over US$40,000, including a gas guzzler tax. But the Detroit Free Press reports that dealers are already bidding up prospective buyers from anywhere to US$15,000-$30,000 over sticker price. Chrysler is not saying how many of the 2008 model will be built, only that it is fewer than 10,000 units for the year. Some dealers are telling customers that there will be only 4,500-5,500 units. "Every dealer in the country is going to get one, and after that we're not sure how many we're going to get. They are basing it on how many cars we've sold in the past," Darryl Pavlik of Colonial Dodge in Eastpointe (Michigan) told the Free Press. "I'd heard they're going to bring $30,000 over sticker."
Significance: If Chrysler really does keep production to the 4,500 level, that would mean that every Dodge dealer in the country will get no more than three Challengers in all of 2008. Some dealers have opened eBay bidding on their allotment, allowing buyers to bid on the premium above and beyond the actual cost of the car itself. One such auction currently allows a customer to purchase the vehicle itself for US$67,000, another has bids of over US$10,000 on the premium to purchase the car. Chrysler has been quiet on any effort to prevent such price gouging by dealers, but with production being kept to such low levels for 2008, the premiums are not unexpected. Scarcity of the model will drive the price up as demand far outstrips supply; with this being Chrysler's first true rear-drive muscle car coupé in decades, the nostalgic value for wealthy collectors is sure to drive the price up even further.
I do think they are late to the party (it's a Challenger, so 'they'=Dodge, who were late to the party last time round). Mustang sales are falling. The green lobby is gaining momentum even in the US. California are suing the EPA for not enforcing CO2 (which means fuel economy), there has been huge infighting in the Senate/Congress about raising the CAFE requirements (fuel economy) with some kind of legislation inevitable (even if veto'd by Bush, it'll just postpone it to next year), gas prices are going up etc etc. Fuel economy is an issue. So demand in general will be tempered for thirsty vehicles.
Having said that, the market dynamics are different this time around. These are not the equivalent of 2.0 Cortinas any more (i.e. affordable sporty cars for the yoof masses). The people buying the high end cars (the only one on sale right now) have money and probably don't worry about economy. But with the numbers they are going to make and sell, Chrysler will not get rich on these, it's more of a halo car. Once they start selling V6 models to the masses (assuming they do) they will sell more but it still wouldn't surprise me if after a few years people get bored and move to something else. That's the problem with making all these retro cars, more of a limited life fad than a new niche. But I think it will be a success, it just depends on how you define it - was the original a success? But not along the lines of the recent Mustang
Anyway, I would love an SRT8 (for free of course, wouldn't want to pay money!),
