Pete,
Dead heading is when the fuel stops at the carb and has nowhere else to go......so if your not flat out the fuel flow is not being used, the pump is working hard against itself, trying to push fuel up a line that is already full....then the pump gets hot and heats the fuel hurting performance and eventually killing the pump
You can get Return regulators and have a return to the tank this will allow the pump to run consistently and not heat the fuel as it is not trying to fill an already full line....as it is being returned to the tank
Holley even do a return reg that looks exactley the same as the conventional one most of us use
the return must be after or incorporated in the Regulator or as Duncan said it will take the easiest route back to the tank...and you will have no pressure
Regulators with hi and low pressure bypass is what i bought.....sorted
