Ivor, if there are ways around the ruling - tell me more? My car's original texan reg is available for £250.

Back in the 1970's you got a plate that was current for the year the car was imported.

My old 1970 GS was on an 'R' plate.

You have to pay road tax though with a later plate.

I should have thought it through more, I guess the tax liability depends on declared date of manufacture ?

Personalised plates may get around the 1st Jan, 1973 rule as well.

It does depend on the year of manufacture as stated on the bottom of the v5. Never paid any tax on my S reg..(1978)

Yes I know HEM 15 on Carlos Monteverdi's 71 Cuda.

The DVLA used to issue new registrations to imported cars, and those that still have them can keep them. I don't think there is another way of putting a newer reg on an older car. That's why I have MOP4R on retention. I've got nothing I can put it on at the moment.
