Dash voltage reg / temp gauge question

Post by andyrob »

Temp gauge not working on my roadrunner & petrol gauge always reads lower than it really should.

Have continuity checked the voilet temp wire from the clocks to the temp sensor, fine & tired earthing the wire but no movement on the gauge.
circuit board on clocks looks really good with no cracks etc

Now the dumb Questions..................

So am I right in thinking it is probably the voltage regulator ?
Is the voltage reg the 2 parts on this photo with the arrows to it ?
Can I test it ?
Who's the best to get one from ?

Anything else I can do ? or could it be the gauge itself ?

Bin it and build an electronic one from parts out of Maplins for a fiver and get a constant 5 volts to the gauges without any fluctuations.
Plenty of info on it on the Challenger Messageboard, ask yer Daveman for a link I can't do it from this poxy phone :thumbright:

Sounds like it firstly - from experience I had - yes that is the voltage regulator your arrows are pointing to. You probably can test it - One of the Daves or someone with more knowledge than me will point you in the right direction if you can use a mutiimeter. If replacement is required dashworks in the states do an upgraded one for $55 if you can't find one here or want an upgrade .

I bought a solid state one as recommended by Blue but never used it. Think it was around £35 delivered from the states.

Yes they are easy to make. You need to check the voltage from it with a meter first to make sure that is where the problem is. Then i can pop into Maplins one lunchtime for you if you like.

Here is the link so you can make one.
I have all the parts as I'm planning on make 10 or more and selling them to club members so if you need the parts quick let me know.

That's a good idea and I don't know why anybody ain't thought to make a batch before. Takes minutes to make and cost next to nothing comared to those custom modified units and they work.

cheers lads for all the info, am going to do the conversion highlighted by Mr Norm & Anton, very well explianed on that link, the voltage is fluctuating from 2-4 volts, but think its the temp gauge itself that is u/s

Anybody got a working 68-70 non rallye dash temp gauge ??

did a quick hnd in electronics then this conversion as per the excellent link above, Adrian (top man thanks again) gave me a temp guage out of a van, with a different face but the same mechanism behind, so carfully drilled out the tiny rivets & swapped the facia over, tried it but could not get enough temp in car idling in tonight's northern condition's so shorted temp gauge to earth & flicked ingnition on & bingo temp gauge started to move

Cheers for everyones help :thumbright: & thanks to this club its fixed.

Also I now have joined facebook as per other thread & posted this question & got 'whats a plymouth roadrunner' 'Ive got a saxo  just need to pass my test once I get off the dole'

Electronic dash regulator- can they burn out?

Post by GranSport »

All 3 dash gauges on Charger fried.
Old regulator pushing out 12 volts

3 new gauges + Built an electronic one and fitted into gutted old regulator.

Coming home yesterday hit the same problem- 3 gauges way off to the right. Stopped car quickly and pulled wires to all 3 sender units.
Back home checked the electronic regulator- 12 volts at both terminals
Opened it up. No shorts, just 12 volts at the 5 volt terminal.

Did it burn out and short to the input voltage?
Could a voltage of amperage spike cause it to fail?
Before it failed I blipped the throttle on start up and the amp gauge was 30-40 amps.
Bit stumped and can't afford to risk the gauges again.

Cheers

In Andyrob picture I cant see the capacitor to protect the chip against voltage spikes and that could be you problem.
See the original article on how to build one and they use a capacitor to protect the chip. The one I made has been on my car for three years now.
