Torque converter bolt torque talk

Post by Demon James »

Hi all, hope you are managing to get out and about in this cruising sunshine 8-) I had a loud metallic knocking this week and found a bolt half out on my flex plate. The bolt was a stainless steel one and it was too long so appears to have reached the torque converter before tightening fully on the flex plate. Anyways, its stripped so ive successfully installed a helicoil and the correct bolt and loctite :thumbright: the info i've got says to torque them up to 270 inch pounds but I come up with different numbers when I convert it to Newton meters or foot pounds as thats all i have on my tourque wrenches. Now I accept I might be being a bit thicky McThick from thickshire but can any one :help: Oh and the second photo show a missing bolt from the engine to bell housing  I presume there should be one

270 inch pounds is the torque you'd get by resting 270 pounds on a spanner one inch long . If the spanner was a foot long you'd only need 270/12 pounds on the end for the same torque = 22.5 foot pounds

So just divide by 12

Or , if you want to think the other way round, 270 inch pounds is also the torque from resting one pound on a spanner 270 inches long . 270 inches = 22.5 ft , so it's 22.5 foot pounds

They don't need huge torquing, but do use loctite or they'll work free again.

I only had a 271" long spanner so I've just been into the garage to cut an inch off it.
Only problem I have is I have to dig a 25 foot hole under the car so that I can use it. :thumbright:

If the bolt was too long then I doubt the head will be the shallow head type needed.
A normal height head on the bolt will catch the block at times.

Cheers guys as ever :thumbright: Doh I was being a right plum, i did the divide by 12 one first but tried to back it up with the converter on my phone. Problem is i was using newtons and pounds of force not Newton Meters & foot pounds. 30Newtons came out as 6.7 Lbf! Cheers for the splitter Matt I'll drop it back before I go away, unfortunately it didn't fit so I saved the thread tips with an old castle nut and convinced the tapers out with a "tool for all" hammer :? The leaking rad didnt survive the sump removal as I had to move the trany fluid pipes which only exaggerated the botched (by others  ) joint repair so its off to the mender mans :thumbright: Still, should start chucking it down ready for when I'm finished  I suppose I should have bored you all to tears with my work so far before Robtwin or Stu tell me off for being too shy at the next Hooks Cross eve
