Best way to strip plastic grill?

otherwise Kev via JohnR has sodablasting buisness.

I very much doubt a grill would be a problem, either size wise, construction or excessive time and effort.

As said, Soda blasting, they use it on the underground trains to get rid of graffiti etc, does not damage Glass rubber etc, but takes off all the crud and paint.

Well I have read this thread and I wonder why some one has not suggested the old stand by.....brake fluid , works great washes off with soap and water and wont harm the plastic, that is an old school method

if it were me I am in the middle of restoring a 71 cuda grille and all the argent is flaking off so I did use some 180-220 sand paper ( yes it takes some time with all the detail but it is easier than a chemical with all the smell and mess),and some filler primer and it works fine with that method

I put anything that will fit in the dishwasher.... Cleans everything really well. I did my mates D100 grilles in mine when Mrs B was out, cleans all the dirt off so you can see exactly what needs further stripping etc

I find the dishwasher does not do iron parts well. Just makes them rusty.

Seatbelts work well though. Come out like new.

Y'know drew I have tried brake fluid a few times, including on this grill (I even bought some for this purpose) and have had NO success at all. Did not touch the paint........
I have actually had most success with cellulose thinners (aka lacquer in US) but you need to be careful.
But I just want it done and I like the sound of the sodablasting - Dave who is Kev? Also I seem to recall someone mentioned these guys who are pretty close by http://www.enviroblastuk.com/.
I would do it myself Ivor but from experience it would take a decent few hours once I set it all up (have to do it in the garden as grill won't fit in my blast cabinet!). I'll get a quote from someone and decide the best way forward pending any other suggestions.
Phil & Steve, both your plans involve the missus being absent....and she just went away for a few days recently (allowing me to get on with the car

) so that ain't happening again for a while. But Phil I like your thinking pattern, very creative!!
As for the dishwasher, I would not DREAM of using that for cleaning parts, especially not my filthy trans crossmember which would have worked a treat if I had done it even though I didn't. And Paul Knight already got me in trouble for that....even though it never happened honest.
And a grill won't fit anyway............

Wow if thinners, brake fluid wont break it down it is time for some very easy soda blasting ,

and now to convince the wife to put her seat belts in the dishwasher

My dishwasher is only used for parts washing these days. Daily dishwashing added about £70 a 1/4 to my leccy bill.

John R is John Rutlidge who owns the silver barracuda in RHD, on here quite regularly, Scott and Derek were helping him with the restoration
and Kev is helping him with his swap to 318 Magnum FI power and 5 speed box. John engine swapped and made ready autofetish's charger for its trip to germany, does plant marine and car stuff

when you see johns car being worked on its mainly at kevs place

kev is his mate, he owns a silver covrette stingray which he brings to the NATS each year

Kev runs a soda blasting buiness and also does a handy line in scaffolding

which means he can soda blast really big stuff as well like ships and building facades.

however he has the touch to do smaller and much more delicate things as well.

both John and Kev are based near Gatwick, both own trucks and can of course transport stuff if you got the urge to say... do the whole car, or your trans , axle and engine.

used to have a one of Kevs soda blasting brochures but can't find it for contact details

if you PM JohnR he can get you kevs number and you can discuss your needs and methods to tranport parts from you to there or kev from there to you. not sure if kevs blasting kit of appropriate size is mobile

dont think modern brake fluid will work as well,think its paint freindly,

just to let you know soda blasting is different to using your normal blast cabinet, as it is mixed in with water, try looking up Aquastrip, there is a place round here does it, i get my aluminium panels done with it.

Thanks guys I will contact KB and also Enviroblast I think, just cos they are much nearer me. Soda blasting can be done without water so it is viable at home, but not for a part my size in a cabinet.

Kev is great take a trip down there both Kev and John are great

remember that soda is a alkaline and you have to Bananarama! with vinger to neutralize it before you paint

I put my grill in a wheelie bin filled with hot hot water and fairy and left a airline in the bottle and made a bubble machine left for 2 hours then as said wet and dry slow slow
