Roll Cage - Dart 68

Post by GJUK »

Hi,

I've had a bit of a look around but no one seems to stock a roll cage for a 68 dart. Is this something I would have to get someone to fabricate for me?
Are there any 'off the shelf' kits (in the UK) which you can buy?

Bolt in or weld in.

Thanks

Jon

Do you mean a roll bar or cage and will you be driving it on the street ?

Nothing off the shelf in the UK. Any of the race shops in the UK can do it, but it will be pricey. Better off getting one of the smaller shops to do it such as Dave Billedeau.

Jon as blue says your better getting one built, and the price will vary depending on how much cage you want, 4,6,8 point etc and what material, either CDS or chrome moly (also known as 4130) if it's street/strip a 6 point (main hoop, 2 bars to the boot and 2 door bars, these can be made to swing out for easier acces) cage in CDS would be more than adequate, (this is all you need to run 10.0-11.99 in completion)

Chrome moly, because it is inherently stronger you can use a thinner wall tube for quite considerable weight savings. Or you can always do what they did in the early days, make it out of exhaust tubing and stuff it full of rolled up newspaper to make it sound thicker than it is  In fact Wild Willie Borsch used to make his complete fuel Altered chassis from exhaust tubing 'cos he worked in a muffler shop. I mean it's not like he drove it hard or anything....

Moly is around half the weight of equivalent cds tube, but is much harder to bend/cut/notch, worth it in the end tho, next time I'm at the workshop I'll weigh 1 meter of 1 5/8 moly and cds to get a comparison if you want

Yikes! I guess that's air freight?

If you're not in too much of a hurry, I'd suggest getting it shipped to someone like STS Imports (Ron Fenton on here) who has a unit in Florida and ships cars/parts here in containers by sea, roughly once a month. You still have to pay the tax & duty of course, but the shipping usually works out a lot cheaper :thumbright:

Just remembered, there's a A body main hoop down the workshop in 1 5/8" CDS, that's a start...
