1974 dodge pick up 360 engine a 4 speed manual

Post by Johnny Dart »

Just out of interest, is a 1974 360 engine, 2wd 4 speed manual pick up gearbox suitable for use in a similar year car, or are they different ? :-k :-k

They'll fit but a lot of light commercial boxes are overdrives.
Prob ok behind a small block but I wouldn't race it.
Check the shift levers on the side of the box, if they all point upward from their selector forks it's a std trans, if the 3-4 shift lever points down its an o/d box ;)

4 speed manual out of a truck

here ya go

list of most of the 4 speeds with ref to long and shoft tailhousing

and the shifter mount points

http://www.hotrodreference.com/102/mopa ... ar-ratios/

and then everything you ever need to know about A833s from an abody point of view just remeber the slant 6 bellhousing and flywheel is smaller thanthe the small block one

http://www.slantsix.org/articles/4-spee ... speed1.htm

for an A body you'd want a short tail housing

or you might be able to get a long one to work with the 2 shifter mounting pads. and mount the shifter in the position most suitable.. but ist still not A body shifter hole suitable unles you build a new mount and support it between the 2 existing 3 bolt shifter mounting pads. and mke up custom shift rods using threded rod and rose joints

will probably involve prop shaft shortening i would think

you might find that with a swap between manual and auto anyway

Over drive trans might be fun. if you get an ally one you will probably need to bush the case for any decent power handling. they were made for slant 6s

Great and informative post Dave.
Ive had a quick read, and it looks like the box on the end of the 360 is a np435 not a A883.
Is this box less desirable ?
looks a bit big, although looks like an alloy bell housing.
If I buy it , I was planning to sell the fly wheel ,bell housing and gearbox , to help fund the engine.
But if it won't be easy to sell , I'm not sure what to do .
Any one got a cheap 360 ?
See pics.

Yeah just seen that pic of the tranny  ......... that ain't no good for a passenger car or even a pickup, that's a proper 'truck' transmission ;)
Although the bellhousing will fit LA blocks it probably won't bolt up to an A833.

I think my idea of buying the engine and box, and selling the box, to help fund the engine has been scuppered

If I can't sell the box, as its not desirable, I might as well look elsewhere for just a 360 engine.

I imported a pair of alloy heads, a cam kit , and intake and 4 barrel, before the car got here.
just need an engine to build up now.
I tend to buy stuff, when I can get a good deal, and store until I need it :thumbright:
