Had the same problem with the front lights on my 70 Superbee about 12 years ago. Didn't argue just bought a pair of 1960's Rover 2000 rear lights from the local breakers yard. Wired the white (reversing light in Rover application) as the side light and the orange light as the turn indicator. Cost at the time was £10 which included working bulbs. Looks OK and an easy change back if I want original look.

LEDs not an option back then, guess I'd probably go that way now.

Never had a problem with mine , its got 2 orange lights in the grill that act as matker lights, also indicaters, as one flashes the other one stzys illuminated.
They automatically come on with side and headlights.

Yep you're right Dunc, and it won't be long before the tests are live on camera to a central control office where they view the test being done live.

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. For now I will just make the temporary changes because I guess if it just goes to another test station the failure notice will come up as soon as it is logged in.

The switchback bulbs look good - but the US ones I googled seem to switch between amber and white (?). We need both amber and white together. If they do that then problem solved.

The big issue with retaining the spirit of the original lights is that the MOT rules say that any lamp may not be "adversely affected by the operation of another lamp e.g. dual function lamps on foreign vehicles."
So that rules out any flashing brake lights even if you have an amber light showing as well - apparently.

Have you got insider knowledge on this, or are you just surmising what the future might hold.
Personally,I wouldn't be suprised, labour would stamp out everything motor sport based and remotely enjoyable under the guise of a very dubious green policy and unfortunately, although not to the same extent, the tories are along for the ride as well, after stating in their pre election manifesto that they would "stop persecuting the motorist " more guff to get people to vote for them.
Oliver Cromwell would have been proud of the governance we have in this country but as long as we get tribal voting in this country, we will get the covernment we deserve.
Climbs off soap box now.

Im with Dunc on this....its not too difficult to get your car legal (and safer with correct oranges at the rear etc). My Polara is totally UK legal and doesnt stop me enjoying it at all. My next job on the Fury when I get back on it is to rewire the orange sides at the front up into the new UK spec Autopals with side lights built in to get it legal. Bit of work then dont worry about it.

Never mind the friendly MOT guy! it's the friendly plod you will need if running illegal lights. Don't forget that post a few of weeks ago about the freshly married couple being nicked for having Dixie horns on their Charger!

Nah, you just need to know the right people :)

I would never drive a car that was not safe for the road, I want the car I am in to be 100% safe and sound. Any leaks, flag them up and I will sort them.

Drive to Nottingham and I will hook you up :D

So change lane in the same way that most BMW drivers do. Just coast over, then check your mirrors...

In the above case perhaps you could say the driver was 'showing off' his car, maybe the police took offense to that?

To be fair I would find dixie horns as a bit over the top, were they ever factory fitted to cars?

Jon :)

I know enough garages that will pass my car while I sit and have a coffee with them if I wanted that. Its more about a proper, safe MOT and a car that you can use without being pulled every two mins and getting fined. The guy I use is very fair and will go through everything with me as he checks. He knows I work hard to keep her straight and sorted so I get a fair deal.

A fair deal is all anyone would want. To be sure a car is safe is all anyone with common sense should want also. I think the comment about being pulled every two minutes is a little OTT though.

The opening post however seems to suggest the MOT guy in question was well over the top.

I would change it on my car if I was pulled over 260,000 times a year. That would get quite tedious.

Agreed...I run an MOT Station and this is pretty much the choice you are left with.
