I'm planning to upgrade ignition system as this can make a big difference ( I'm still on points system ) and then tune carb to get the best I can with what I have. I'm also looking at changing the gearing as the 2.76:1 ratio I have at the moment is great for cruising , but I'm after a more street / strip ratio

It's all about Smiles per gallon !!!

yeah, im looking for street strip. might be setting up a 1/8 mile drag at somepoint once we find a location.
i want the lumpy idle tho. had one of these cams in my trans am.... http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam- ... =2.....was the smaller one to this tho. sounded good but didnt make a great deal of difference in power.
are there any good cams that work well? i have a manual box, dont know if that makes any difference to what cam i can have?

I have a friend who has owned a 1973 runner for over 20 years now, great serving cars and good on the gas with the small block!

You can build a 390 c.i out of a 318 but its gonna cost. Your looking at....
£1000 ish for the stroker kit (crank pistons and rods ) example
£300-£400 for cam, followers and pushrods. Depending what you get
£30-£100 for timing chain Depending what you get
£500+ for decent set of roller rockers
£1000+ for a set of heads
£200 for cheapish headers
£50+ for high volume oil pump
£250 for intake manifold
£300+ for vac secondary carb
£300 for competition clutch
Another 2 or 3+ hundred for bolts, gaskets, bearings, Block work etc
Also you will need to upgrade the rear end gears too
And countless other bits and pieces ive forgotten to add. Ive just made a rough guess from my experience on my 340 stroker rebuild which is knocking on the door of 2K and I already have stroker kit, heads manifolds and carb.
Still wanna do it?
If you are intent on building an engine, use the car as is and buy a block to build over time.

Thanx carl. That was a big help. As it happens ive just done a deal on a 360 motor that was stripped ready for rebuild but the guy went big block instead. Picking it up on the weekend all being well. Think ill just keep to high comp pistons, cam, intake for now. Have a carb I can use. Hoping the block wont need a rebore. Im not after massive power. Just enough to have some fun but still be able to take it on a run.
If the block is stripped I would have a +50 overbore done ready for when you decide to go that little bit further, forward thinking is what its all about.
Or at least have it re honed which you will need to do anyway if your putting new rings in.
There is no real cheap easy "get out of jail free card" when it comes to engine building, unfortunately.
