Stinkystinky. Herts/bucks engine tuner ?

Sunny day, used her for a run. Runs wonderful. Pulls strong, makes all the right noises, revs well, doesnt pink etc etc. But man does she stink. The MOT man last week said he reckoned he could run another car on what was coming out the back... He knocked it down from 5% to 2.5ish but it still pongs. Needs a proper tune.

Now I have never jetted carb etc - its as it was when engine was fitted. Timing I am pretty sure is good now. Advance curve set up right. No vac can mind; something amiss there - car doesnt run at all with vac on.

So - herts guys - Anyone recommend a local guru who can ram a probe up her pipes and twiddle/jet the carb until the pong calms down a bit ? (yes, I might have to get a new vac can - whilst brand new the MSD ones are not adjustable (which seems odd) )

Any local tuner recommendations ?

If you get no local offers you could always run it up to the office and we'll go thru it in the yard?
I'm interested to find out why it won't run with vac. That would be my reasoning for the eye watering exhaust.

new problemette to sort - stupid fuel lines leaking again. Only a drip, but still petrol so not good. been crap since the day it went in - its the carb fitting. Tried mega tight, rubber washers, fabric washers ( which had been fine) but now oozing again.

new thread methinks. How the @@@@ do people get carb fuel lines to seal ??

The fitting in to the carb?

John (Blue) told me to replace my solid type silver holley bar for some AN6 fittings, they have an o ring and are bang on. They seal even when they are not that tight. Bit of a cost buy I got all of mine and fuel line for about £100 to do the engine bay.

My car does not like the vac port on the dizzy fitting to it either and my car stinks of fuel big time.

Yep. Thats the one. I'll get the fitting sorted first (time to give up on the old fittings, its never gonna be right) then much around some more with the vac.
Vac is annoying. It must be moving as car bangs like a mortar-cannon when connected (which implies it isnt locked out) - but its like its over adjusting like mad. Which begs the question why isnt it adjustable ? Which means it must be me... Which is good; as it means someone with more nous may see whats wrong).
Thats the plan. I'll sort the fittings then Ade and I will have a play with the vac can.

AN6 or AN8 ? Whats the diff ? Need to research which is right for a holley750...

Timing I am pretty sure is good now.

Remind me what your timing figures are?

Also have you checked the timing marks are correct on the damper?

18 initial. 34 all in at 3000rpm.
Runs lovely. Stinks terrible.

Ref marks. No. Have been taken as gospel...

leaking carb mounting

if you go to halfords and find the shelf with the sump plugs on it

a BMW or ford uses a sump plug with a washer that has rubber seal bonded onto both sides. its the ideal size. take you fuel pipe with you to check. its like a tiny Misab gasket

these have a proper enginering name which i just can't remeber its a
%$^$^&%$ washer if you catch my drift.

use them and put the tinyest smear of blue hylomar on the later few threads.

so you deal with the mount and you deal with thread leakage


you can use plumbers teflon but it goes stringy and makes it way to easy to split the carb top

becasue real tight on a dry thread is approx 1/2 as tight as real tight with a teflon coated thread

you will hear different views on teflon tape and fuel systems

i used it on the fuel pressure gauge bung with no adverse effect and no needle valve blockages.

in an emregency i have used BOSS white plumbers putty..... however i would not suggest that is particulary good idea

linseed oil based putty will of course be diluted by fuel and thats not that good

get you home though

-6-8 are the sizes

AN is arm navy

The 6 or 8 depicts how many 1/16

So 8 x 1/16 = 1/2 OUTSIDE DIAMETER

This meaning that every manufacture is slightly different and as a rule of tumb pipes and fitting need to matched. As some pipes has thicker thinner walls

Fitting to fitting normally matched between brands but check the degrees of flare on both sides

-6 is fine for what your running
-8 would be a dommy on methanol

Speed flow and good ridge are not cheap

Torques UK on eBay sell a cheap version which a lot of members are using

Dowty washer for a doubtful connection. The bowden stuff makes your twattle work when you floor the pedal.
