As part of my continuing research I spoke to Frosty today, as I'd been told he used to run these trannys.
He had some sensible advice (which was of course the last thing I want to hear...) and mostly advised me against ANY manual gearbox. So, much as I admire his achievements, etc, he was never going to 'get' what I'm after.

I'm with Duncan on this one.
I wouldn't go by somebody elses opinion based on their achievements. Do your own research and if it's what you want then go for it. I ran my Dart with the 4 spd and loved it but when i fitted the 440, i didn't think the 8-3/4 would last behind the 4 spd, so i went auto. Ironically, i ended up fitting a dana 60 anyway.

Great powershifting here, and possibly the nicest backdrop of any dragstrip I've seen 8-)

Yeah mate, I don't think he had my best interests at heart :?
The only thing holding me back is that I've read that these gearboxes can drop out of gear if not under load, Andy also mentioned this.
I've also read that this doesn't happen.

I'll probably end up buying it anyway...

You go for it mate.
We've all tried to convert you to auto in some shape or form, but you've stuck to your guns.

I've had to walk away... I can't be 100% sure but the weight of evidence is that these trannys will drop out of gear when not under load. So, useless for the street :(

Still too spendy for me but a great option Dave! Miles cheaper than any overdrive or 5 speed. Maybe summat to think about if mine ever eats itself :thumbright:

As soon as I hear Doug Bananarama! always takes me to a picture from my yoof - in the mid-eighties I was on hols with my mate Adrian in the US and we ended up staying a couple of nights with Bret Kepner (track announcer, drag racing encyclopedia in his head, hilariously bonkers in abusing cars (another story) and aka "Mr Dirt" a successful (slow) bracket racer). We went to the Friday nite drags (RWYB) at St Louis raceway with him and the car that I fell in love with was a white '70 Challenger, streetable (-ish I guess), leaf sprung, and running 9's with a Doug Nash trans =P~ =P~ Never forget those wheel-up launches and bang shifting that sucker all the way. Fabulous. I still have some pics somewhere.
That could be you!!!

I did get a ride in a Lenco-equipped street car that many may remember - our very own Mr Andy Neal when he had the Hemi Dart!! OK it was to the bottom of the road and back, but again, fantastic....

Either option should confer instant hero status..go for it.......... :thumbright:
