Early 727 help?

Post by RobTwin »

Hi all,

While the Polara was in at Hauser's to get the driveline vibration sorted (which was a great success, at last!), we also asked Geof to look at the leaky park mechanism assembly on our push-button 727 and see if he could change the gasket while it was up on his ramps.

When we collected the car, he said they changed the gasket but found one of the springs (or THE spring?) in the mechanism had lost a bit of its springiness, but they put it back as best they could and sealed it up with the new gasket.

Since then tho, PARK doesn't seem to hold the car as well as it did. If you put it in PARK on a bit of an incline, it jumps forward with a knock / clang as if something’s jumping a tooth.

So.... have any of our experts over here (you know who you are ;) ) got any info on what parts might be at fault and what are available / replaceable on a 63(ish) PB 727?

We've scoured the 'net for any kind of diagrams or instructions but no luck so far.

Anyone?

Thanks in advance :thumbright:

Dunno Steve, could be? Especially after Geof's had it apart but we think the 50+ year old parts probably need replacing by now too!

I asked this question on FBBO too and someone has suggested it could be this part that's worn:

The FSM doesn't give much info at all, just a basic diagram with no exploded view to show the parts involved. I was hoping the like of Blue/Dunc/Dave Bish might have some insider info they could part with ;)

Ive done a couple of them and it sounds like the cable is too tight holding the park paw away.

Thanks chaps, looks like a bit of adjustment is the first step. And that book looks a worthwhile investment at £16 for the paperback Cheers for that Steve :thumbright:

I've set two of these up now Rob and I replaced my cable with a shorter chunky B&M cable and outer. Initially I had either Park to 2nd or Reverse to 1st but a little tweak sorted it all out.

My old cable had kinked when the outer gave up so I pull through the gears ok but the poor pushing action meant the selector sat between 1st and 2nd.

I thought I had engine trouble when pulling away hard in 1st because it stumbled and lurched if I held it. I found out the box was trying to go into 2nd but the selector wax neither back enough for 1st or forward enough for 2nd.

Give me a bell if you want a hand :thumbright:
