Just swapped all my sealed beams for new h4 h1 units and fitted new wiring loom with relays.
Everything is wired correctly and Everything works as it should when engine is off. BUT when I start engine the outside headlights areally on all the time and one bulb has popped!
Switching ON main beam with lights OFF actually puts Everything OFF but switch off main beam with lights switched off and the lights come on!
I'm very confused as EVERYTHING works as it should until you start the engine then problems start.
Any thoughts?
Incidentally my alternator is running at 14.9v so could that be something to do with it?

And I've just found out there's a constant 8v to the dipped beam on original wiring which explains why the new relays are kicking in when they shouldn't.
All very confusing and something isn't right.
Can I risk running the h4 bulbs on the original wiring? Or is that asking for trouble?

is your car supposed to Running/side lights on all the time?
like a 1970s Volvo?
OR
Does it have dash light feed and the bulb has gone?
sounds like the interior light variable feed might be getting involved?
OR
what else is on when you see this
would be good to know if the 8v is going the opposite way to the 14.9 when the light is working properly
would probably signify a short or a poor earth linked to the other item that is on
8 volts is the value that comes out of the ballast when the ignition is in the RUN position??

8v is what's coming from the RH old plug when new loom is plugged into old lh lamp plug.Dave999 wrote:is your car supposed to Running/side lights on all the time?

Very confusing but I think it might just be a dodgy ebay loom!
The main beam new loom and lamps are working perfect though!
