Hi everyone, new member

Post by Tedthedog »

Hi to everyone, my names John, and I recently joined after my long time friend Gary, Mossy68 or " Cuz" ( He used to be married to my wife's cousin ! ) persuaded me to join the MMA. I previously had a Red 1987 Ram with a 440 big block in it. I used to go to school with the sadly now departed Paul Mitchell of GS Autos in Romford and he and Peter Simms used to help me maintain it. I had that for a good few years and sold it a couple of years ago due to personal reasons.
As soon as I sold it I regretted it, and have been pining for another Ram ever since. preferably one that did more than about 8mpg !
I recently had the good fortune to bid on and win a 2008 Ram 5.7 Hemi SLT with 33k miles, that was listed on good old eBay. Due to the terrible quality of the listing I was the only bidder and got it for a very reasonable amount. The truck is in excellent condition and all of the fluids / oils are clean. There is evidence of Mopar genuine filters etc being used. But only verbal service history. No service book either.

I'm currently amassing all of the parts I need for what I can only describe as a mega service and would welcome advice as to whether the auto transmission fluid should be replaced and any other items that I should look out for, such as the fuel filter etc. I'm going to do the oil, oil filter, air filter, plugs, brake fluid. I have ordered a pinion oil seal as this is leaking and when GS Auto's can fit me it will be done asap.
It only had a short MOT and recently sailed through its mot with only an advisory for light misting on one of the shocks to show for its age.
Just thought I'd say hello and would gladly welcome any pointers. I'm reasonably mechanically minded and if I can't I probably know someone who can.
Mostly I know about the older stuff and all this new fangled stuff is a bit beyond me I'm rapidly approaching the dreaded big 60 so points and condensers were more my era than ECU's.
Thanks for reading, take care, John

Hi Cuz , and welcome to the mad house !!!
A bit of on line research should give a mileage when the gearbox service is due.
Otherwise , enjoy it. It’s a lovely truck , and I enjoyed every minute driving it back for you.

Welcome welcome... pics would be nice.

I’m a bit the same when I get a new (used) car. Like to go through it throughly and do every last little thing. If you want to change the trans fluid and filter I’d say go ahead, it will only do the box good, and as long as it’s not some ridiculously expensive fluid milked from a unicorn then you will know it’s done and can tick that off the list. I change fluids at a probably a bit too often but it has served me well in the past.
Just drive it and I’m sure you’ll pick up the odd thing that need fettling. Enjoy your new toy

Oh and I love a great eBay item badly listed... :woohoo:

Hi again, thanks everyone for such a warm welcome, I know my old Ram truck with the 440 was more appropriate for the tastes of many on here. It was right up there on my wish list too. I sold it to a friend of a friend, as he drove off I knew I'd made a huge mistake. Other than the fact I knew he would look after it and it was possibly the best home it could go to. He doesn't sell stuff on and is a real enthusiast.
I have actually tried to buy it back, but that's just not happening !
I love the new Ram but its not like my old one. It was pretty lively. Every journey was an adventure. I used to give it a good stretch over at North Weald test and tune. It was a hoot. Life got in the way and unfortunately it was time for it to go.

Its "mossy68"'s fault I got into the newer Rams. He took me for a "gentle ???" run in his SRT10. I now know the colour of Adrenalin ! Its BROWN !! I also have a Nissan 350Z (wife's car allegedly ! ) and that's pretty quick but the sensation I got in the SRT10 was addictive. I had to get another truck. As he often says "It's smiles to the gallon, not miles to the gallon".

I was open to any modern Ram really, and after test driving a couple of vastly overpriced Rumble Bee's at dealers, fate was kind to me, and "mossy68" and I had a 300 mile round trip to pick up my latest eBay bargain. It initially all seemed to be too good to be true but it actually was far better than we could possibly have expected. All I could see in my rear view mirror of my 350z on the motorway journey home was a massive grille and an equally massive grin on "mossy68"'s face. As we went through the tunnels he dropped back and then accelerated past me the sound was amazing. I knew it was an excellent buy.
Thanks for the advice already given. I look forward to meeting some of you at shows etc.
Regards John

Hi John and welcome to the club and forum.

Great story and sounds like a good truck you have, a picture would help us.

You are correct about the "smiles per mile"

I used to have a 7.7 litre Cadillac and enjoyed putting fuel in her, now down size to only 5.6 MOPAR :)

Enjoy your LIFE. :thumbright:
