What is my engine? Possibly sussed it

As in my workshop thread we stripped the engine down today.
This has raised some questions...undoubtedly its not the original motor but what is it?
I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on what I have.
Firstly the block is painted red, also I think it may be a 273 going by the casting numbers BUT why is there no provision for an oil filter?

Perhaps someone can help with the stamped numbers.

filter usually goes on a right angled adapter passenger side under the rear most exhaust runner.

i.e if looking at/facing the flywheel or converter its on the right hand side at the lower back of the block...or it usually is.

or if you want to be australian it goes right where the steering box wants to be so....
a flat adapter with 2 pipes goes there and you have the filter upside down sitting at the front of the inlet manifold on an adaptor and bracket. for maximum mess and oil fumes once you change it.

i don't know a v8 well enough to understand what i'm looking at so i can't tell if you have a photo of the area or not.

if your block has no filter boss id imagine it can be drilled and tapped after the pump but before oil is distributed for a remote filter set up. just make sure you have the oil going through the filter the correct way (the adaptor usually has IN and OUT cast into it) and you block the gallery between outlet and inlet so the oil actually goes through the filter, all of which will need to be done on a bare block.

last one i did was a VW that involved a pipe on the outlet side of the pump cover.
the normal pump outlet being plugged and a plug in the end of the main oil gallery being drilled and tapped for a pipe barb.

oil from pump to filter
normal pump outlet blocked with grub screw and loctite
oil from filter back into block at the first corner after the pump

i'm guessing when i suggest it for a v8 but hey they ain't that different

Mocal/Think Automotive in isleworth can usually supply all of the parts to do this kinda thing.

Cheers Dave, yeah there's no oil filter boss to attach a filter. Not looked at it too closely as I'm busy welding the shell. Once I get the engine back home I'll be able to spend the time on it.

I have never seen a small block without the large circular cavity for the oil filter adaptor before, surely must have the oil filter mounted somwhere else? A 3rd gen Charger with a 273 will be somewhat sluggish, I would be looking for something bigger rather than rebuilding that.

Whoever in its past swapped the motor... never fitted the remote filter this 273 must have had :banghead:
I agree with you Blue its not ideal, I will be looking for something else to fit.
It was a runner though so I'll give it a freshen up just to get it back on the road while I save the penny's for another motor.
Either a 318 as I have the 904 or a 360/727 combo as I think I would rather stay small block.

makes you wonder if it was an industrial engine or a marine engine.

both need oil filter but i guess could have had a different set up than an easy spin on automotive filter.

360 will go on a 904, believe any small block will

Yes a 360 will work with your 904. If you can run to it, stroking that out to 408 would give you a good amount of grunt to lug that big 'ol lump of metal around.

Okay I've found the oil filter :) I was in the garage this evening sorting out a bench so I can get the block of the floor and in the process of moving things around I picked up what I thought was the vapour canister... Oil dribbled out of it :-k
So I decided to open it up and have a look

Yep one oil filter, which I unknowingly brought home with me a couple of years back Duh in my defence we did pull the motor 3yrs ago and as it was in the vapour canister location, well its a slim excuse :oops:
That got me thinking as to how it must have been connected, firstly the oil pressure sensor is on a Tee

and secondly one of the bolts holding the fuel pump is hollow

This got me thinking about something Dave999 mentioned about Australian motors so a quick search and this 1965/66 Valiant AP6 popped up

in this picture you can see the same oil filter housing bolted to the engine , the supply line running to it along the inlet manifold and the return line coming out of the bottom and heading down to the fuel pump.

Good detective work, that certainly seems to be what you have there. I wonder if all the early 273s were like that or if it is for an industrial application that just happened to suit the Aussies needs? Every days a school day in the world of Mopar...

Oh they are good and quite effective. only thing lacking might be anti drain back

and with that kind you are not taking off a canister type filter with the dribbly end down

That's good to know Dave :thumbright:
Worth keeping then? I have thought of replacing it with a remote screw on canister.
I'm just glad that I have some idea of what the engine is and how a filter fits in.
