Older cars, what are my options?
My car is pre 1994 which has the old refrigerant in the system which is now unavailable as it is now illegal, What are my options?
There are two options available which are to convert the system to use r134a or use a replacement refrigerant such as ( Isceon 49 )
or rs24
To convert the system to r134a requires extensive replacement of various parts of the system which can outweigh the value of the vehicle in both cost of parts and labour.
Be aware that you could be offered to convert it for a nominal sum, in this case the required work may not be carried out and will cause the system to fail and will be expensive to put right.
Isceon 49 is a proven alternative replacement for R12 car air conditioning systems already used by thousands of air conditioning engineers .With little or no modifications required .It is compatible with existing oils, seals and hoses. It is the leading R12 replacement for car air conditioning systems therefore saving many hundreds of pounds converting the existing system to R134a.

HI Niel,
Love the fish by the way,
These guys are good they chuffed the Road runner at Billing with the ISO 49 for £65 and its working fine, shame there "up Norf".
I have spoken to Bob Harman in Watford for the "suveners" and his guy called Cliff imports a kit from the states which allows 134a to be used safely in older cars but its a bit more expensive.
Technical bit the new gas 134a has much smaller molecules than R12 therefore can leak through old hose and weak seals a lot easier than the old R12 it also uses synthetic oil instead of mineral oil (as with R12) to lube the compressor, this oil eats the old rubber seals and hoses.
The kit that Cliff uses comes with two additional components that they inject into the system one which converts the old mineral oil into a synthetic replacement on a molecular level and a sealant which coats the inside of your system a bit like bars leaks.
This allows the old system to be refilled with 134a.
normally he charges £200 but if there are about 6 cars or more he will do it for MMA members for £170 +vat. Any Takers?

Looks like your already sorted, however I purchased some bits from a company called Classic Auto Air in Florida for a charger, they have spares for most orginal systems, (especially the RV2) and they can supply the R134 conversion kits you mentioned, remember the other benefit of a 12-15HP saving by going over to a new 134 compressor, I have a copy of a magazine article where they converted a Big Block Charger system from R12 to R134, let me know if you want a copy and I will upload or email it t you.
