Hi Pete it was good to meet you. I couldn't believe it when I saw your car there!
Dave - blimey thanks for all that info. The mechanic at the garage who did the other work has a rebuild kit for the carb so it might be worth seeing if that sorts it. It is definitely a 2bbl carter. The guy at HP told me to buy a high top?
In the words of the mechanic it coughs and splutters when you"boot it"
and I have to pour petrol into the carb to get it to start.

, colour, stance, wheels, looks grand
we were only saying at the weekend that body colour on wheels doesn’t work (some orange thing went down the strip with orange wheels – yuk), however, yours looks great, nowt wrong with that at all

yeah the high top is the later carb the chances of it being warn are therefore reduced. it used to be easier to get parts but makes little odds these days.
when worn they need the choke to start
you should have a rod that goes to a thermo coil heat box on the manifold
should spring up and down
adjust choke so it hangs open about the thickness of a match
and start car
then watch choke
as the engine heats up it should open fully
if it doesn't the rod is probably attched to a totally rusty and jammed heat box
inside it is a bi metallic coil that expands when hot and pushes up the rod to open the choke
could never get my BBD to start without the choke....but mine was warn at the throttle shafts.
good carb for standard set up bud bad rep due to just about every one you find being worn
