What ignition to go for?

Post by rockinrich01 »

Sat waiting for my fuel tank to come back from being cleaned out and wondering if i should change my ignition system!!
I've got a 1970 Satellite 318ci, been having a missing problem. It looks like its got a Airtex conversion fitted in the distributor, are these any good and reliable or should i look at changing it all??
What do you all recommend??

I have just installed one of these Firecore units that does away with the orange box and ballast. Allows full voltage to the coil and dizzy for better spark. Super simple to fit (as I did it) and the build quality (from what I can see) looks excellent. My first 27 miles shows better running for sure ............. time will tell.

Looks as though they are available for small blocks too...

Nice find John, must take a look at the Nats. Should be a tidy installation.

I`ve left all the existing wirefoolery and have the old dizzy in the boot just in case Miles

Some years back John, I'd have an entire spare ignition system in a box in the boot. Came in very handy at the Nats one year when my ECU crapped out.

cheap as chips

works

mopar electronic dizzy

Blaster 2

4 pin HEI module

this search for modules on ebay

(AC DELCO,Wells,petronix,car quest,Napa, niehoff,Borg Warner,GM,Mallory,jegs,moroso) (DM 1906,D1906,ACC35361,aCC35367,D2000,21040,ECH TP45, Dr400 ,CBe4,cbe22,10482820,607,555-40600,97857) (module,hei,)

use a coil designed for 12 volts with 0.5 to 0.8 ohm primary

i.e

Blaster 2

or

and these are only £20

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/lucas-DLB198- ... 462ed78576

or indeed

an HEI coil like the one used with the module originally

search

HEI coil (DR-35, E41, DR-182, IC22, 342D, GC400,D525)

Obviously if going racing then there are probably better alternatives

but for a reliable street set up....for notta lotta cash

Dave, I posted a similar set up like this as a query. I think Steve has one on his Polara.
Thanks for posting up the cheaper coil option :thumbright:

I did think about this option Dave but it would have meant keeping the orange box (or alternative) which isnt what I wanted. Plus thye Firecore dizzies are the Bananarama!

if you need to buy a new dizzy the n its not the right option

economies of scale are lost....buy a package from any one of the BIG ignition people.

but if you have a dizzy you can be back on the road for £30-£40

Very much personal choice, but I would always opt for a system with an integral Rev Limiter...essential for a manual transmission or a manual valve body Auto....

I can only say how I have done it, with good results;

Convert from points to Pertronix Igniter II pick-up inside the dizzy.

Fit Pertronix Flame Thrower II Coil.

Remove Ballast Resistor and replace with jumper cable.

I think this is also well proven.

I then keep the ballast resistor and points in the boot if for if I did have some kind of failure.
