Honey, I blew up the trans...

Following my spectacular exit from the wings & wheels show 'demonstration run', I have been checking for damage and it doesn't look good.
I first saw that the front bearings in the prop were gone.
Then took off the oil pan and found the trans case has cracked from side to side :shock:
So that looks pretty terminal then.

Plan A. Take old trans to the tip. Get complete new (newly rebuilt) trans.
Plan B. As plan A, but get used trans and rebuild it.
I'm not sure that there would be that much of a cost difference between the two?

Any advice gratefully received...

Roydon has a fully rebulit FORWARD pattern manual BB A727 transmission that he had prepared for his Challenger but he is not going to use that now if that helps....

Thanks Pete, I may be giving you a call...

Steve - I don't know. It happened at about 4000 rpm in top. There was a bang, then smoke, and a lot of clanking as we stopped. I didn't think there would be enough side force from the prop moving to break the case in half but who knows?

i would think you have had something come apart in the trans to blow that case like that,

I had a 727 in some years back that had let go on a rolling road. The case had split into 3 pieces. There was no other damage inside and nothing I could find that might have caused it, I thought maybe it was a casting flaw.

might just be 40-50 year old aluminium....you don't know what previous owners did to it :)

the cast wheels on my car have a life of 6 touring car races according to Chrysler (obviously big tolerance in that, how long is a piece of..... erm Race) before they were supposed to be scrapped...

road use had no use-by date due to using road tyres road suspension and road shocks.
but stressed aluminium does tend to get minute cracks in it

penetrant dye on a different case makes sure you get a goodun

Why would the UJ go on the prop if the box had let go?

It's a mystery. Once the trans is out it might be clearer whether the UJ is the chicken or the egg...

Can you buy brand new gearboxes? Maybe this is the way forward but probably a few thousand pounds? eek.

Well I got the trans out, and I think it has definitely had it :shock:

When I have time I'll look inside (not difficult now!) and see if there is any clue as to what the cause was.

In case anyone is wondering - Can you drop the trans yourself after a working life spent behind a desk? Yes. Do you want to? No you don't.

That looks to have split pretty much in the same place as the one I mentioned, across the rear servo shaft hole, round the case and across the selector shaft hole.
